On Friday, May 3, 2024, the United States Congress's Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries held an oversight field hearing titled “How Many Wolves Are Enough? Examining the Need to Delist the Gray Wolf.”
The committee noted the "hearing [was] focused on the impacts of an unmanaged gray wolf population on local communities. Specifically, the subcommittee [heard] from impacted stakeholders from the agriculture community, sportsman, local elected officials, and wildlife biologists."
Here's the committee's YouTube of the hearing:
Minnesota state senator Steve Green, R-Fosston and state representative Nathan Nelson, R-Hinckley testified in the hearing.
According to a constituent email, Nelson gave the subcommittee a tour of his farm before the hearing:
Today I had the opportunity to host a delegation of congressional members to witness firsthand the impact of gray wolves on the local agriculture community. The visit shed light on the challenges faced by farmers due to the increasing gray wolf population. The delegation toured the farm and observe the effects of these predators on livestock.
Farmers are the backbone of our community, and it’s crucial that we address the issues they face,” said Representative Nelson. “This visit will provide my colleagues with a firsthand understanding of the damage caused by gray wolves, and I hope it will lead to an effective solution to delist the gray wolf. This underscores our commitment to finding a sustainable solution that respects the ecosystem while ensuring the continued success of local farming.
Following the tour the Natural Resources Committee held their field hearing on the issue in Sandstone....
I'll post a digest of news about the hearing should coverage appear in Minnesota media.
